01 | Copyright protects the expression of ideas.
Example: books, lyrics, photographs.
02 | 17 U.S. Code § 102(b) tells you what is not copyrightable. This is a good start!
Example: ideas, facts, names & titles.
03 | If no exclusions under §102(b) apply to you, then your work may qualify for copyright protection if it is original and fixed in a tangible form.
04 | Copyright protection begins when your idea meets #2 & #3 above: fixed, original, not excluded by law. You do not have to register it.
04 | Protection lasts for the life of the author + 70 years.
